Sometimes, no matter how hard you exercise or how healthy you eat, certain parts of the body still hang on to stubborn fat. Everybody has problem areas and it isn’t always easy to eliminate them with a healthy lifestyle alone. In these cases, liposuction can help reduce stubborn body fat and help you to achieve the figure you’ve always dreamt of. It’s a very common procedure and can be used on various parts of the body.

If the fat pockets are well defined and you have a good skin tone, you’re likely to see excellent results. The most common areas of the body that liposuction can target includes the thighs, buttocks, stomach and flanks. However, it can also be used on less common areas such as the knees or elbows. Mr Paul Tulley will often combine liposuction with body reshaping surgical procedures, such as abdominoplasty, thigh lift and arm reduction surgery, to produce the optimal results.

What does the liposuction procedure involve?

The way liposuction is performed has changed dramatically over the years. Now, there are several techniques to choose from, all of which will be carried out under general anaesthetic.

Small incisions, roughly 5mm long, are created before various suction cannulas are inserted through them. They suction the subcutaneous fat out of the body before the incision is closed with fine sutures. A compression garment is then applied and will be worn between four to six weeks. This doesn’t just help to limit the swelling, it also helps the skin adjust to its new shape and maximises results.

It is possible that liposuction could be carried out as a day case. It will depend upon the extent of the procedure so you may need to stay overnight. You will be able to go back to work within ten to fourteen days, though vigorous exercise should be avoided until the bruising has gone down, typically within three to four weeks.

Results of the procedure should be visible from four to six weeks as any residual swelling disappears, but final results could take from three to six months to present. In this time the fat and skin will soften and have a smoother appearance.
